Deep Tissue Massage Therapy
Depending on what you've heard, a deep tissue massage could either sound like a relaxing afternoon or something to fear. A deep tissue massage can be an effective form of relaxation and pain relief, and there's nothing to be afraid of! At Crystal City Massage in Arlington, our massage therapist is here to provide you with a variety of massage techniques.
What Is Deep Tissue Massage?
In order to understand deep tissue massage, it's important to understand how and why our muscles become tight and achy. Muscles are surrounded by a connective tissue called fascia. When our muscles are taxed through exercise, injury, or simple every day activities, the fascia can adhere to the muscle. This results in painful muscle knots. Deep tissue massage works to release the fascia from the muscle, while also working to reach deep levels of muscle that often go untouched during a standard massage.
There are many potential benefits to deep tissue massage, including enhanced relaxation, relief from chronic pain, increased mobility, and increased rate of recovery from injury, relief from muscle tension, improved posture, better sleep, and relief from nerve pain. The more often you have a deep tissue massage, the more pronounced these benefits will become.
Does Deep Tissue Massage Hurt?
Your massage therapist will start with light pressure, then gradually move on to deeper pressure. Your therapist will check in with you regularly to make sure the pressure is at a level that feels both effective and tolerable for you. While deep tissue massage can feel uncomfortable, your massage therapist will work with you to ensure that areas with scar tissue or fascia adhesions are fully worked. It's important that you feel free to communicate with your massage therapist during your massage. If you feel pain or need your massage therapist to lighten the pressure, simply say so. Your therapist will be receptive and understanding of your concerns. It's our goal to help you feel better, and we don't want to do anything that causes you pain.
A day or two after your massage, it's possible that you may feel some stiffness, tightness, or soreness. This is completely normal. You can help to alleviate these feelings by drinking plenty of water and engaging in some light stretching.
